Enemies of the Heir, beware…Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J。K。 Rowling is the second instalment of the Harry Potter series, published on July 2, 1998。 The main plot involves the Chamber of Secrets, a hidden chamber within Hogwarts built by Salazar Slytherin。 A big fan of racism, Slytherin built the Chamber to house a monster that can only be controlled by his heir and intended to attack all those, mainly Muggle-borns, whom he considered "unworthy to study magic"。 Now, someone has op Enemies of the Heir, beware…Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J。K。 Rowling is the second instalment of the Harry Potter series, published on July 2, 1998。 The main plot involves the Chamber of Secrets, a hidden chamber within Hogwarts built by Salazar Slytherin。 A big fan of racism, Slytherin built the Chamber to house a monster that can only be controlled by his heir and intended to attack all those, mainly Muggle-borns, whom he considered "unworthy to study magic"。 Now, someone has opened the Chamber, implying the Heir of Slytherin has returned to Hogwarts, but who is it? And that's what I loved about this particular story of the series - it is PACKED with questions and answers, and you're constantly guessing。 You may have noticed this storyline has relatively little to do with the overall story arc。 While the books were still being written, COS was accused of essentially being devoted to a non-related story plot for this reason。 But in reality, the book is a significant episode, and it introduced a major Chekov's Gun among other bits of foreshadowings for several later books, particularly Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince。 Indeed, as JKR was still a freshly-starting-out author, her editors made her remove some parts she wanted to leave in, and so she had to cram them into book six。The tone is very similar to that of the previous movie, but it came off as feeling a little more bloated and less spirited to some。 The first book presented the wizarding world almost entirely as a place of wonder and whimsy。 While the threat of Voldemort loomed large over the heroes, he was presented mostly as a bad apple in an otherwise magical place。 With this book, however, the honeymoon is over, and the series begins to dig deeper into the problems of the supernatural world as a whole, namely the undercurrent of prejudice and discrimination that goes back centuries, and of which Voldemort is only the most recent manifestation。 。。。more

October 2021: First audiobook reread in like a decade。 Far better than I remember。 Though I think in my mind i’m just more used to the movies since i’ve seen them way more times。 The movie absolutely does not do the book justice。 Cannot wait to finish this audiobook reread and then physically reread the series again🖤

Yes, I’m finally getting around to finishing reading this series。 I read the first book then saw the movie。 I never would have figured out what was going on in that first movie if I had not already read the book。 Yet against my usual tendency to read the book before seeing the movie adaptation I went ahead and watched a few more movies without reading the accompanying books。 After the fourth movie I was so lost I refused to watch anymore movies without going back and reading the books first。 Thi Yes, I’m finally getting around to finishing reading this series。 I read the first book then saw the movie。 I never would have figured out what was going on in that first movie if I had not already read the book。 Yet against my usual tendency to read the book before seeing the movie adaptation I went ahead and watched a few more movies without reading the accompanying books。 After the fourth movie I was so lost I refused to watch anymore movies without going back and reading the books first。 This is the second book in the Harry Potter series and likewise Harry’s second year attending the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy。 A fun, although at times intense, read with wizards and witches, spells and magic, mythical creatures and fantastical beasts in modern day England。 A modern day classic。I enjoyed it very much but knocked off a star from my review as there were some intense depictions of extreme child abuse along with extreme cruelty to a house servant known as a house elf。 。。。more

CHAMBER OF SECRETS is unique in that it is the only entry in the series to basically be a one-off adventure。 Aside from the fact that Tom Riddle's diary was later retroactively revealed to be a horcrux in HALF BLOOD BRINCE, this entire story is mostly a filler episode that never really has any payoff in the larger saga。However, it is still a good mystery story in its own right, and serves the important function of being a stepping-stone in the HARRY POTTER mythos。 The first entry spent a lot of CHAMBER OF SECRETS is unique in that it is the only entry in the series to basically be a one-off adventure。 Aside from the fact that Tom Riddle's diary was later retroactively revealed to be a horcrux in HALF BLOOD BRINCE, this entire story is mostly a filler episode that never really has any payoff in the larger saga。However, it is still a good mystery story in its own right, and serves the important function of being a stepping-stone in the HARRY POTTER mythos。 The first entry spent a lot of time giving us exposition and introducing characters, and so this entry is able to jump right in and tell a better-paced and more intricate plot。 By focusing so much on the Basilisk, the story is able to introduce how wizards view racism and racial superiority, and we get a better sense of the warm and loving Weasley family versus the cold and classist Malfoy family。Speaking of the Weasleys, while Molly and Ginny were given brief cameos in the first entry, this is where both truly make their debut。 Ginny's crush on Harry and how it propels the plot is very endearing, and I wish the crush had ended after this installment (more on that in my reviews of the later books)。Best of all, JK Rowling continues her formula in the first four books of making the twist villain a seemingly minor character we initially sympathize with。 Tom Riddle initially seems very friendly as he communicates to Harry via the diary, and when we learn of his lonely teenage years coming from an orphanage, we feel bad。 That Tom (or this apparition of teenaged Tom) turns out to be not only the villain behind everything but Voldemort himself is one of the best twists of the series。But on the negative side, well, certain elements of CHAMBER OF SECRETS come off feeling more juvenile than its predecessor, and probably the most juvenile of the entire series, with elements such as a flying sentient car and or the Basilisk traveling through the walls yet never actually killing anyone。 Gilderoy Lockhart is the most one-note cartoon character in the saga, someone who is so obviously a fraud to a class of 12-year-olds and even his own fellow teachers seem to see right through him。 Colin Creevey, the boy obsessed with his camera who always takes photos of everything for no reason, and Moaning Myrtle, the self-pitying ghost, are both amusing but one-dimensional。 And I've never liked Dobby。 Dobby could honestly have been named Plot Point, as that's his only role in the story。Still, CHAMBER OF SECRETS is all good fun and is mostly a transitionary step。 While we get some minor world-building like the introductions of Lucius Malfoy, Cornelius Fudge, and mentions of the Ministry and Azkaban, this is also the one final stand-alone adventure in the simple, comforting atmosphere of Hogwarts。 This is one of the lesser-tier entries in the saga, and it is a children's story, but a good one。 。。。more

This used to be one of my least favorite books in the series。 In fact I would skip it when I re-read the series。 But after re-including it in subsequent series re-reads, I realized how much key plot info is introduced here that doesn’t become relevant until book 6 and 7。 I think to appreciate book 2 one should read again after finishing the series。 A lot of dots are connected that I didn’t appreciate until I knew the full story。TL;DR: try reading the whole series a second time to appreciate how This used to be one of my least favorite books in the series。 In fact I would skip it when I re-read the series。 But after re-including it in subsequent series re-reads, I realized how much key plot info is introduced here that doesn’t become relevant until book 6 and 7。 I think to appreciate book 2 one should read again after finishing the series。 A lot of dots are connected that I didn’t appreciate until I knew the full story。TL;DR: try reading the whole series a second time to appreciate how much info is dropped in this book about HWMNBN’s You Know Whats。 。。。more

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second book in the Harry Potter series, a series about magic, adventure, and wonder。 Harry was a wizard and went to the wizarding school, Hogwarts。 The book starts off with Harry Potter living with his extended family, who despises him。 It is interesting in the way it introduces new characters and new ideas。 An example of this is when Harry finds a notebook and he writes in it and it writes back to him, and learn that the main antagonist is Tom Ridd Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second book in the Harry Potter series, a series about magic, adventure, and wonder。 Harry was a wizard and went to the wizarding school, Hogwarts。 The book starts off with Harry Potter living with his extended family, who despises him。 It is interesting in the way it introduces new characters and new ideas。 An example of this is when Harry finds a notebook and he writes in it and it writes back to him, and learn that the main antagonist is Tom Riddle。 It is great to see how Harry relates with his friends Ron and Hermine。 They both support the book having more depth。 One complaint about the characters is that Hermine is very helpful to Harry and Ron, as she is the brains of the group and advances the main plot smoother when she is in the book, but she is absent for the last half of the book。 I also think that at the beginning the pacing was a bit slow and dragged on for a bit more than it needed。 I also noticed that there were about one or two chapters that felt more like filler, but for this kind of book, it makes sense to expand the world as much as you can。 The ending was okay and I feel like it ended with a few things still needing to be wrapped up。 Overall this book was one of my favorites and I would give it a four-star review, for how it made me wonder and invest in the world。 。。。more
